install the literary1984 app
the literary1984 app is a quick dashboard for the club’s current read, weekly assignment, next meeting, rsvp, reminders, announcements, votes, events, and important links.
it does not replace discord or the full website:
- the app is for quick access to what is happening now.
- discord is for conversation, discussion, and community.
- the website contains our full schedules, guides, archives, book lists, and longer information.
installing the app adds a literary1984 icon to your home screen. nothing needs to be downloaded from an app store.
important: open this page in safari or chrome before following the instructions. installation may not work correctly inside discord, instagram, or another app’s built-in browser. Many in-app browsers do not support normal PWA installation. (web.dev)
iphone and ipad
1. open the app page
open safari and visit: literary1984.com
safari is recommended for the simplest setup. current versions of chrome and edge on ios can also offer add to home screen. (Google Help)
2. open the share menu
tap the share button.
depending on your safari layout, you may first need to tap the page menu or more button and then choose share.
3. choose add to home screen
scroll through the share options and tap: add to home screen
4. confirm the installation
make sure open as web app is turned on, then tap add in the top-right corner.
the literary1984 icon should now appear on your home screen. Apple currently documents this same installation flow for turning a site into a Home Screen web app. (Apple Support)
5. open the installed app
return to your home screen and open literary1984 using its new icon.
android
1. open the app page
open google chrome and visit: literary1984.com
2. open chrome’s menu
tap the three-dot menu near the top-right corner.
3. install the app
tap one of the following options:
- install app
- or add to home screen, then install
the wording can differ slightly depending on the phone and chrome version. Google’s current instructions use More → Add to home screen → Install for installable web apps. (Google Help)
4. confirm
tap install on the confirmation window.
the literary1984 icon should now appear on your home screen or in your app list.
turn on optional phone reminders
after installing:
- open literary1984 from its home-screen icon.
- tap turn on phone reminders.
- allow notifications when your phone asks.
phone reminders are optional and can be turned off later through manage reminders near the bottom of the app.
on iphone and ipad, web notifications require ios or ipados 16.4 or later, and the app must be added to the home screen and opened from there before the notification prompt can appear. (OneSignal)
having trouble?
i don’t see “add to home screen” or “install app”
make sure:
- you opened the page in safari or chrome, not inside discord.
- your browser and phone are updated.
- the app is not already installed.
the app opens like a normal website
remove the existing home-screen icon and install it again using the steps above. On iPhone, make sure open as web app is enabled before tapping add.
notifications are not appearing
open the installed app from its home-screen icon, tap turn on phone reminders, and allow the permission request. Also check that notifications are permitted for literary1984 in your phone’s settings.
