welcome to Literary 1984!

we are a small, student run book club in the triangle area of NC.

we read big books, small books, strange books, and everything in between.

Some of us write, too—stories, poems, essays, and other short-form experiments. (more info here but completely optional)

*Curious why we’re called Literary 1984? Let’s just say we read like Big Brother’s watching

Why “Literary 1984”?
The name comes from a political cartoon meme in which a man flips his calendar with mounting dread, only to discover that the new year is… 1984. His expression captures pure existential horror—the perfect emotional backdrop for a book club, honestly.

Originally proposed by Roi in January 2025 as Literally 1984, it was later adjusted to Literary 1984 by Devin (February 2025) as a nod to the nature of the club and our deep, slightly unhinged love of literature.

Given the state of the world—where surveillance capitalism, algorithmic authoritarianism, and blatant censorship are somehow both real and banal—it feels… fitting. Or maybe inevitable

Subject to change—just like history, memory, and the Ministry of Truth.
