Welcome to The Literary 1984 Book Club.
We’re a small, student-led book club based in the Triangle area of North Carolina. We read across genres and centuries — from Tolstoy and Milton to Jackson and Kafka — and we talk about it. In person, on Discord, and sometimes in voice channels for those of us who are remote.

what we read

Our reads include classic literature, literary fiction, short stories, poetry, essays, and even some genre fiction — as long as it’s good. We’re open to anything that invites discussion, analysis, or yelling (the good kind). we also do make an effort to include diverse offerings and voices in our reading list (though it is unfortunately not reflected in our past reads just yet)

Past books: Crime and Punishment, Metamorphosis, the lottery, Paradise Lost, Anna Karenina (in progress).
Upcoming reads: constantly voted on, occasionally cursed, always interesting.

how we work

We typically read a book over the course of a few weeks – months, with set checkpoints and group discussions on Sundays at 2PM.
Members can participate in person, via Zoom, or asynchronously in our Discord.
Discussions are casual, thoughtful, often unhinged, and always judgment-free (unless it’s Paradise Lost).

who are we for?

Anyone who wants to read more and think about what they’re reading — no background required.

Lurking is valid. Showing up late is valid. Not finishing the book is valid. This isn’t school. We just like books.

writing~

We also have a Writing Circle: a separate, smaller group where members share original short stories and give literary-focused feedback. More info here.
