so you want to join literary 1984
cool. let’s get into it.
we’re a slightly unserious, deeply sentimental, kinda academic book club run by students in NC. we read stuff that makes us feel alive. or dead. or confused. preferably all three..
what even is this club?
- we read novels, essays, poems, plays, short stories, etc…
- we meet weekly (sat/sun-ish around 2pm in person with remote options available)
- hang out on discord, post memes, get philosophical
- we have a writing circle for those who want it
- sometimes we have side quests (mock trials. debates. atonement rituals. the occasional musical theatre outing…normal things.)
what you’ll do
- be interested and curious. read when you can, show up when you want, lurk forever if that’s your vibe. no pressure.
- we would however appreciate it if you could vote on our next reads (using our mildly cursed spinner system)
there’s no pressure to read everything or show up every time. it’s fine. life happens. we’re just glad you’re here.
discord is where it happens
think of it like our secret literary hideout.
join it to get updates, book threads, meeting/event info, and Very Serious Literary Conversations™ outside of our regular meetings (and also to vote on the book selection polls!!)
prefer email over discord?
- some people don’t live on discord (valid). if that’s you, you can sign up for email updates – you’ll get meeting info, poll updates, and reading assignments delivered straight to your inbox.
- signing up for our email list is optional/not required if you plan to have regular access to discord!
- note: polls for book selection are currently discord-only, so we do ask that you still join the discord to vote. however, we’ll send the poll link in emails whenever they go out, so you won’t have to be checking discord constantly
- (working on making them email-based in the future)
- note: polls for book selection are currently discord-only, so we do ask that you still join the discord to vote. however, we’ll send the poll link in emails whenever they go out, so you won’t have to be checking discord constantly
website member access
- the members side of this site is a place for reviews, writing, discussions, to log readings, and whatever else we end up building together.
- creating an account gives you access to members-only content and lets you post your own stuff — reviews, essays, creative work, etc.
- you do need to be in the discord first — that’s where the main community lives.
- creating an account is optional!! (not required)
Here’s how our three spaces work together:
- Discord = daily hangout (discussion, meeting coordination)
- Website = creative archive (reviews, essays)
- Email = optional updates (for people who don’t check Discord regularly)
who can join?
students, grads, readers, writers, researchers, working adults, that one unemployed friend on a tuesday, anyone whose only hobby is reading, anyone who hasn’t read a book in five years but is looking to get back into it, anyone who hates reading with a passion and wants to challenge themselves, anyone with mild feelings about books and a normal relationship to reading but wants to join anyway, anyone with no discernible feelings about books at all, and of course any ardent, passionate book lovers
our only requirement is: you must be 18+ 😛 (bonus points if you like boba and/or coffee)
okay but what happens after I join?
- you’ll land in Discord
- assign yourself a role (choose between reader or writer. or both)
- say hi (or don’t…no pressure)
- check out the #start-here channel
- start reading with us!

(click it….
….you know you want to.)
- You don’t need an account to read or lurk, just to post.
- You do need to be in the Discord first, that’s where everything happens.
- you could also sign up for emails if you prefer to be notified that way rather than through discord, but it’s not required
^^^^^^^
^_^
….still unsure?
check out our Club Guide or What We Read to get a feel for things. or just join and vibe. we’re not scary. mostly.
